Rae (They/Them) has over 15 years of experience supporting youth, adults, families and communities in various community, mental health and clinical roles. They have worked for many years in the non-profit AIDS Service Sector, with a focus on LGBTQ+ community service work. In their work, Rae has supported the creation of various community and mental health programs for LGBTQ+ youth and their families across Ontario. These experiences have allowed Rae to work with a diverse range of complex mental health needs. In their practice, they aim to similarly support those with a diversity of needs, including emotions that feel difficult to control, suicidality, anger, trauma, anxiety, depression and disassociation; they have a focus on neurodiversity and its presenting characteristics, including autism, BPD, psychosis, and dissociative disorders.
Rae has experience providing DBT-adherent therapy while working as a Psychotherapist in a Family Health Team setting and while providing consultative supervision to a non-profit DBT program in Toronto. Rae also has over seven years of experience working with Transgender people to navigate and access various non-profit, government, healthcare, and legal systems in Ontario.
Rae connects with DBT because it provides tangible skills that can help people move closer to their goals and live the life they want to live. DBT understands that there are things that get in the way that might not be in our control but acknowledges that it's still important to work on changing the things that we can change. They have formal training in many therapeutic modalities, including DBT and CBT. However, Rae is passionate about using DBT because of how the model helps them work with others to identify and practice the strategies that work best. For Rae, therapy is about finding and doing what's effective, and DBT is effective.
In their spare time, Rae enjoys playing with their two dogs, gardening, and losing at various multiplayer strategy games.
